PlantHome: up to three times cheaper than herbs from the supermarket!

Our PlantHome: when you arrived to this blog, you’ve probably already seen it on our webshop. The PlantHome is our indoor vegetable garden with built-in LED-light with which you can easily grow your own vegetables and herbs. Besides the enthusiastic reactions we get from our users, potential customers sometimes let us now that the price of a PlantHome is holding them back. In this blog, we explain why the PlantHome is really worth the money and how growing with this indoor vegetable garden is cheaper and better than buying fresh herbs in the supermarket.

If you need a small amount of fresh herbs to prepare a particular recipe, chances are that you will use a container of fresh herbs from the supermarket. However, in most cases, you won’t need all of these herbs. Unfortunately, you cannot keep these loose springs of herbs very long and the rest will probably end up in the trash. When you choose home grown herbs instead of the supermarket product, you will worry less about waste, because you cut the amount you need from the plant and the plant just keeps on growing! You might be thinking now; but the supermarket herbs are much cheaper, right? This is not really the case:  a container of herbs often costs between €0.89 and €1.15 and for one Plant Cup, with which you can grow a small plant, you pay €1.24. Therefore, the Plant Cup might be a little more expensive, but because the plant stays alive for two months after it’s fully grown, you can use it for much longer. In addition, containers from the supermarket contain 15g of herbs and with one plant cup you can grow about 20g of herbs, but because the plant grows back up to three times, you can harvest 60g of herbs. That means that growing with a PlantHome can be about 3 times as beneficial as buying supermarket herbs! Also, when using the PlantHome, you have no plastic waste because all our growing bowls and lids are reusable.

Many supermarkets sell herbal plants for a relatively low price, for example you can have a large basil plant for €1.50. However, the disadvantage of these herbal plants is that they quickly die after putting them in your kitchen. This happens due to the way these plants have been grown: they’re often grown in greenhouses, but are not strong enough to grow further in the consumer’s home. When you use the PlantHome, you don’t have to worry about this. With two Plant Cups in one growing tray, you can grow a full herbal plant, which, if left in the PlantHome, will live for another two months after it’s fully grown. For two Plant Cups you pay € 2.48 and since you often only enjoy a plant from the supermarket for two weeks, the PlantHome will easily save you money!

After reading this text, you might be convinced of the advantages of growing with the PlantHome compared to buying herbs in the supermarket. Still, we can imagine that you think €129.95 for the PlantHome is quite a lot of money. One point to keep in mind is the fact that the PlantHome is really designed as a long-term solution, the LED-lamp lasts up to 8 to 10 years and the PlantHome is made of sturdy bamboo material. The electricity costs of the PlantHome are also not very high: if you always use the highest light mode (20h), this comes down to only 150kWh per year, which will cost you € 2.50 per month. Also, for €129.95 you not only receive the PlantHome, but a complete starter set including reusable growing bowls and lids (worth €19.95) and a free set of Plant Cups and Plant Pads (worth about €15). Especially when you use the PlantHome for several years, this will save you tons of plastic waste. You could even see the PlantHome as a nice addition to your interior: thanks to the neutral bamboo colour it almost fits into every home and when the light is turned on it’s a real eye-catcher! In short, it may be a considerable investment, but the PlantHome is guaranteed to provide you years of enjoyment and you contribute to a positive change in our current food system!
