How does growing on water work?

You may have seen our PlantHome before and thought you were looking at 'just' an indoor vegetable garden. But nothing could be further from the truth! In our PlantHome you can grow your own fresh vegetables and herbs, but our growing bowls contain water instead of soil. Growing plants on water is also called hydroponics and has been used more and more as a technique in vertical (indoor) vegetable gardens in recent years. We can imagine that you haven’t heard of this way of growing before, so we would like to explain how it works.

Growing with our PlantHome is done by ‘planting’ seeds that we have integrated in plant cups or plant pads. These cups of pad fit exactly in the lids of our bamboo growing bowls. You then only have to fill the growing bowls with tap water and add the included mineral pills. A big advantage of this is that you never have to mess with potting soil. Even if you don’t have a green thumb or if you prefer to not get your hands dirty, you can still grow with the PlantHome. Another advantage of growing with the PlantHome, is that you can do this everywhere and during every season. The PlantHome is equipped with a special LED light, so that the plants always get enough light to grow. This also makes our system very space efficient: you don’t have to search for a place with sufficient daylight anymore and you can place the PlantHome anywhere in your home. Because no soil is used, the risk of pests and diseases on your plants is minimal. This in turn ensures that we do not have to use pesticides or other chemicals, which is of course a lot better for the environment and your health!

The plants in our PlantHome get the nutrients they need to grow from special mineral pills that you add to the water in the growing bowls. These pills contain exactly the right amount of minerals for the plant, so there is never a waste of minerals. Because the roots of the plant hang directly in the nutrient-rich water, the plant does not have to spread its roots extra far to get enough nutrients and it is therefore possible to grow the plant on a small surface. In short, growing on water makes it possible to grow your own fresh vegetables and herbs in a small space in your home all year round!
